SEIU Florida members, who are majority women of color, provide essential services in Florida’s
hospitals, nursing homes, public schools, community colleges, universities, municipal and
county governments, airports, and fast-food establishments. The members of SEIU advocate for
issues facing working Floridians such as conditions in the workplace, increasing access to
quality and affordable healthcare, protecting local democracy, and corporate accountability and
tax reform.
“As we celebrate the ways union workers have improved our society, we are taking the fight
forward to November’s elections. This election could not be more critical to the well-being of
Florida’s working families and we must elect public officials that believe in protecting workers
and creating communities where all Floridians can thrive,” said Martha Baker, RN, President of
SEIU Florida’s State Council. “Working Floridians are the backbone of our economy and
deserve the ability to support their families and live with dignity. We will continue to support
candidates who are champions for the working people of Florida.”
Juhi Varshney, an Emergency Physician in Miami and member of SEIU, says, “As an
emergency room physician, I see the consequences of Florida’s 6 week abortion ban every day.
These laws disproportionately impact working class women of color. As the 6 week abortion ban
takes effect, I am proud that our union endorses candidates with strong records on healthcare,
who will stand up for women in Florida and beyond.”
Coy Jones, Vice President of SEIU Florida’s State Council says, “This slate of early
endorsements represents SEIU champions who understand the needs of working people across
Florida. As a union with a majority-women, majority-people of color membership, we are deeply
invested in the issues that impact our communities, whether we are fighting for safer heat
ordinances, better wages, quality, affordable healthcare, a woman’s right to choose, and more.
This pivotal election year, we are standing with candidates who are good for workers, good for
families, and good for Florida.”
Alphonso Mayfield, President of the SEIU Florida Public Services Union says, “We
need elected officials who will work to protect Florida’s schools and the workers who serve
our children. Union members have chosen these candidates because they know they will
work alongside us in service to Florida’s working families, no matter where in our great state
they live. Workers made their voices heard in 2020, raising the minimum wage to $15 an
hour. Now, they’re ready to make their voices heard again in 2024.”
